The Western Slavs associated the black rooster with black magic, divination and spoilage. A clear proof of this: Basilisk - a monster with a rooster's head, toad's eyes, wings of a bat and the torso of a dragon, which terrified innocent villagers.
Many cultures regarded the rooster as a sacred bird, which represented not only the sun or war, but also fertility. The ritual of sacrificing the rooster to the gods for a rich harvest was often practiced in antiquity.
Pagan culture considered the rooster a symbol of Mercury, for it was this bird that carried his chariot.
The Gauls carried the image of the rooster on their shields and banners, and later it became the symbol of Gaul. Some African peoples believe the rooster possesses sacred knowledge of the future, so they invariably associate it with witchcraft and magic.
The Rooster in China
This bird is considered very important in the Celestial Empire. The rooster is considered to be in great esteem there. According to the Chinese worldview, the rooster embodies five basic qualities: courage, reliability, pride, nobility, and generosity. The Chinese out of respect do not eat the rooster, but may sometimes use it as a sacrifice at funerals, justifying this ritual by the transition to a new life through the death of the old one.
